Cleanup of Mackinac Island State Park is progressing well, and the park will be ready for the 2025 tourist season.
With the assistance of the Michigan National Guard, all major roads are now open with Mackinac Island State Park. This includes all of M-185, Arch Rock Road, Sugar Loaf Road, Fort Holmes Road, and Crooked Tree Roads, among others. As such, landmarks such as Arch Rock, Sugar Loaf, and Fort Holmes are now accessible.
Many interior hiking trails are impassable and remain closed at this time. Work on some interior trails will continue into the 2025 season.
“We’ve made great progress,” said Myron Johnson, Park Manager for Mackinac Island State Park. “Granted, there is more work to be done, but our team is doing a fantastic job. We’ll be ready for the season.”
“First and foremost, we thank our dedicated staff,” said Mackinac State Historic Parks Director Steve Brisson. “We’re also grateful to the City of Mackinac Island, Mackinac Island Fire Department, Mackinac Island Police Department, the Mackinac Island Community Foundation, the Michigan National Guard, and others in helping us get so much of Mackinac Island State Park back open so we can welcome guests in a few short weeks.”
We appreciate the outpouring of support and interest in volunteering to clean up trails. The first full week in May is tentatively being looked at for a trail cleanup date.
Volunteer opportunities are underway. Please sign up if you are interested in helping with cleanup efforts for Sunday, May 4, from 12-5pm. More details coming soon.
