Archives Assistant Winter Intern

Mackinac State Historic Parks (MSHP) is a leader in all areas of museum operations and is one of only 25 museums in the nation to have been accredited for a third time. With an average annual visitation of 400,000 in just a five-month season, MSHP is one of the most visited history museum systems in the nation. Mackinac State Historic Parks has six museum sites: Mackinac Island State Park, Fort Mackinac (established 1780), The Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum (Opened 2010), Colonial Michilimackinac (1715), Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse (Built in 1892), and Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park (early 19th century). Each historic site is located in a park setting: Colonial Michilimackinac, Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse and Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park on the mainland at the northern tip of Michigan’s lower peninsula, and Fort Mackinac and The Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum within Mackinac Island State Park.

Scope of Duties:
This position is based at the Keith R. Widder Library in Mackinaw City. The intern will be responsible for processing books, scanning photographs, and other general archival and collections work. Duties may include organization and cataloging of archival collections material, assisting researchers and maintaining a vertical research file. Other duties as assigned. Based on the individual’s interests and skills, intern will also have opportunities to participate in work with artifacts, exhibits and education.

Internship Possibilities:
If an applicant needs to complete an internship to meet credit requirements, MSHP is willing to fill this position for that purpose.

Position Requirements:
-Must be 18 years or older as of first date of employment.
-Must have or be working toward an undergraduate degree in Library Science, Museum Studies, History, or related field.
-Education and experience in basic museum practices.
-Knowledge of collections management, policies and procedure.
-Knowledge of computers and good word processing skills.
-Experience in museum inventorying, artifact handling, marking and cataloging is preferable but not required.

Work Location:
The workstation for this position will be the Petersen Center in Mackinaw City. This position may be required to work at other MSHP sites on Mackinac Island and in Mackinaw City as park needs dictate. The work schedule may vary according to park needs and may include occasional weekend and evening work. Generally, this is a 32-hour per week position, working 8:00am – 5:00pm, Monday through Thursday.

Length of Position:
The start and end dates are flexible with the earliest start date being October 11th. The internship can extend to the last full week of April. The individual must indicate on their application their dates of availability.

Free Housing:
This is an unpaid position, but MSHP will offer free housing to the selected candidate in return for 32 hours per week for internship duties. Housing is dormitory-style with kitchen facilities available.

Physical Requirements:
The Archives Assistant duties will require the individual to bend, twist and potentially carry and lift up to 35 pounds. This position also requires the individual to walk over uneven terrain and may require the individual to sit or stand for long periods of time.

Supervision:
This position does not supervise any other positions. The intern is supervised by the Curator of Collections.
