Scope of Duties:
The grounds/maintenance position is a part of the Park Operations unit in Mackinaw City. This position serves visitors to Mackinac State Historic Parks (MSHP) by performing duties in a park setting with numerous and varied contacts with the public on a daily basis. The immediate supervisor for this position is the park manager..
Work Location and Schedule:
Positions will be located at Colonial Michilimackinac, Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse, Michilimackinac State Park, and/or Historic Mill Creek in Mackinaw City. The employee will be assigned a workstation upon hiring, but may be reassigned to other MSHP sites as necessary. Work schedules are posted in advance and are subject to change depending on park operational needs. Generally, a normal work schedule would consist of 40 hours per week, although the number of hours and total weeks worked may fluctuate based on operational needs. The employee may be asked to work evenings, holidays, and/or weekends as park needs dictate (the park is open seven days a week from the beginning of the season in May to the end of the season in October).
Responsibilities:
- Put our visitors first by treating them as respected guests and serving their needs
- Mowing and trimming of lawn areas
- Cleaning of restroom facilities and bathrooms in offices
- Collection of trash from grounds or containers, and disposal of same
- Painting or staining of buildings or other structures
- Operating state motor vehicles to deliver and pickup supplies, trash, etc.
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Must be able to follow verbal and written directions and able to verbally communicate with others
- Previous experience operating grounds equipment (i.e. lawn mower, weed eater, etc.) preferred
- Have a valid drivers license
Physical Requirements:
The employee must have the ability to do the following activities with or without reasonable accommodation: the ability to walk over uneven terrain for long distances and up steep inclines, kneeling, sitting and/or standing for long periods of time and carrying/lifting items up to 35 pounds. In order to carry out the duties, the grounds/maintenance crew member will encounter frequent twisting, bending, stooping, reaching, grasping and loading and unloading of supplies. The employee will be exposed to various weather conditions including heat, cold, wind and rain; the employees must be able to work outside in those weather conditions.
Licenses:
Employees hired for a mainland grounds/maintenance crew position will be required to have a valid driver’s license and should have a clean driving record. A driving record check may be conducted; if there are issues identified by the check, this may prevent the individual from being offered a position on the mainland. The supervisor of the position will notify you whether this is a requirement of the particular position for which you have applied.
Dress Code:
The park maintains a dress code for employees in the public service to promote a productive and safe work environment and to maintain MSHP’s public image. This means no inappropriate hairstyles, jewelry, clothing or fashion statements are allowed. You are required to be in approved park uniform at all times while on duty, which includes the wearing of proper footwear. The park will furnish the employee with the required uniform items which includes shirts, pants, steel toed shoes, jacket and a cap; all items compromising the uniforms must be returned at the end of the seasonal employment. Violation of the dress code may result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal.
Supervision:
The immediate supervisor for this position is the Park Manager for the site location. This position does not supervise other employees or volunteers.
General Position Information:
This is a temporary seasonal at-will position which serves at the will of the employer and does not include recall rights or benefits (other than those mandated by governmental laws). This position will expire at the time employment is ended for the season and the employee does not have recall rights to this or any other MSHP position in the future. Specifically, the park is under no obligation to hire the individual in subsequent seasons. The number of weeks and hours worked may vary as park needs dictate. Additional information will be provided upon employment.
