Scope of Duties:
Mackinac State Historic Parks (MSHP) staff members are committed to providing friendly, courteous service to the public. All work related tasks will be performed in a professional, competent manner. Museum store clerks will serve visitors to Mackinac State Historic Parks by maintaining day to day store operations, transacting sales for site visitors and providing information services regarding the store, the site(s) of Mackinac State Historic Parks and the Straits of Mackinac area.
Work Location and Schedule:
This position will work at one of the MSHP museum stores which are located at the Colonial Michilimackinac Visitor’s Center in Mackinaw City, The Hearthside Museum Store inside Colonial Michilimackinac, the Fog Signal Station at Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse, the Historic Mill Creek Visitor’s Center, the Mackinac Island State Park Visitor’s Center, Fort Mackinac Museum Store, or at other locations as assigned. Work location may change during the season. Work schedules are posted in advance and are subject to change depending on park operational needs. A normal work schedule is 40 hours per week, although hours and weeks worked may vary. The employee will be asked to work evenings, holidays, and/or weekends, as park needs dictate.
Responsibilities:
1. Put our visitors first by treating them as respected guests and serving their needs.
2. Maintain the physical appearance of the store by cleaning and straightening sales displays (with assistance by GSR’s as needed).
3. Restock merchandise when needed.
4. Advise museum store manager of low inventory.
5. Merchandise tracking: check-in merchandise, label merchandise, restock merchandise, display merchandise.
6. Use museum stores computerized system to review inventory levels of fast sellers at other sites and complete merchandise transfers.
7. Enter sales accurately on computerized register and effectively handle all money transactions.
8. Help maintain storeroom so inventory can be quickly located.
9. Know relationship of store merchandise to the history of the site.
10. Be informed of merchandise construction and unique characteristics including specific packaging and care requirements and instruct guest services staff members..
11. Follow accounting procedures regarding sales as outlined in established guidelines. Museum store clerks are responsible for all monetary transactions.
12. Assist with food service responsibilities and ensure that standards for safe food handling are followed.
13. Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
1. Ability to read and write effectively and to understand and follow written and verbal directions.
2. High school graduate or equivalent.
3. Knowledge of museum store operations preferred.
4. Ability to operate a computerized cash register with speed and accuracy.
5. Ability to count change, write charge slips and compute Canadian exchange rates.
6. Enthusiasm to greet visitors and relate importance of stores to visitors.
Physical Requirements:
Stretching and bending are moves commonly made throughout the day by employees in this position. The employee must have the ability to do the following activities, with or without reasonable accommodation: frequent lifting, carrying, transporting, loading and unloading of up to 35 pounds, walking long distances and up steep inclines in all weather conditions, frequent twisting, bending, stooping, reaching and grasping, sitting and/or standing for long periods of time.
Supervision:
This position does not supervise other employees, but may provide guidance and direction to GSR staff working in the museum store. The employee works under the direction of the Sales Manager and Sales Assistant and works closely with the Lead Worker and Lead Guest Services Representative.
General Position Information:
This is a temporary seasonal at-will position which serves at the will of the employer and does not include recall rights or benefits (other than those mandated by governmental laws).This position will expire at the time employment is ended for the season and the employee does not have recall rights to this or any other MSHP position in the future. Specifically, the park is under no obligation to hire the individual in subsequent seasons. The number of weeks and hours worked may vary as park needs dictate. Additional information will be provided upon employment.
