Guest Services: Guest Services Representative

Scope of Duties:
Mackinac State Historic Parks (MSHP) staff members are committed to providing friendly, courteous service to the public. All work related tasks will be performed in a professional, competent manner. Guest services representatives serve the visitors to Mackinac State Historic Parks by selling admission tickets, assisting guests and selling merchandise in museum stores and providing information to guests about Mackinac State Historic Park sites and the Straits of Mackinac region.

Work Location and Schedule:
This position may be assigned to work at any MSHP site in Mackinaw City or Mackinac Island as assigned by the Sales Manager and/or the Sales Assistant. Work location may change during the season. Work schedules are posted in advance and are subject to change depending on park operational needs. A normal work schedule is 32-40 hours per week, although hours and weeks worked may vary. The employee will be asked to work evenings, holidays, and weekends, as park needs dictate.

Responsibilities: 

  1. Put our visitors first by treating them as respected guests and serving their needs.
  2. Enthusiastically greet guests upon arrival.
  3. Assist visitors with selection of appropriate admission tickets.
  4. Accurately enter ticket purchases into computerized cash register.
  5. Assist museum store guest with purchases.
  6. Accurately enter all museum store purchases into computerized cash register.
  7. Assist museum store clerks as needed in straightening, maintaining and light cleaning of museum store.
  8. Study and be knowledgeable about all MSHP public programs and facilities.
  9. Be available for on call duty as scheduled.
  10. Assist with food service responsibilities and ensure that standards for safe food handling are followed.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  1. Ability to read and write effectively and to understand and follow written and verbal directions.
  2. A staff position with MSHP must be the first work priority. A second job must not interfere with position duties.
  3. Ability to operate computerized cash registers with speed and accuracy.
  4. Friendly, outgoing personality.
  5. Wear uniform as prescribed by dress code policy.
  6. Ability to maintain composure during stressful situations.
  7. Knowledge of or willingness to learn effective sales techniques.
  8. Knowledge of math skills necessary
  9. Display professional work habits, including:
    1. Professional appearance, wearing a clean, pressed, well-maintained uniform, including nametag.
    2. Report to work station on time and be completely prepared to work with the public.
    3. Display a friendly attitude toward guests and co-workers.
    4. Be prepared to work at various assigned sales outlet.
    5. Knowledge of math skills necessary to maintain accuracy in making correct change, computing Canadian exchange rates, etc.

Physical Requirements:
Stretching and bending are moves commonly made throughout the day by employees in this position. The employee must have the ability to do the following activities, with or without reasonable accommodation: frequent lifting, carrying, transporting, loading and unloading of up to pounds, walking long distances and up steep inclines in all weather conditions, frequent twisting, bending, stooping, reaching and grasping, sitting and/or standing for long periods of time.

Supervision:
This position does not supervise any other employees. The Lead Worker or the Lead Guest Services Representative supervises this position under the direction of the Sales Manager and Sales Assistant.

General Position Information:
This is a temporary seasonal at-will position which serves at the will of the employer and does not include recall rights or benefits (other than those mandated by governmental laws). This position will expire at the time employment is ended for the season and the employee does not have recall rights to this or any other MSHP position in the future. Specifically, the park is under no obligation to hire the individual in subsequent seasons.  The number of weeks and hours worked may vary as park needs dictate. Additional information will be provided upon employment.
