Exhibit Technician

Department: Museum Programs
Locations:  Primarily Mackinaw City with travel to Mackinac Island
Start Date/ End Date: late April – early October

Scope of Duties:

This position assists the exhibit designer in a wide variety of tasks related to the development, care, and upkeep of Mackinac State Historic Parks (MSHP) exhibits and displays. Exhibits and displays include period settings, artifact-rich display cases, murals, dioramas, outdoor panels, touch-screen video displays, dress-up rooms, and interactive exhibits. These are located at all historic sites and within Mackinac Island State Park.

Responsibilities:

  • Daily exhibit maintenance including repair and replacement of exhibit components; changing light fixtures and bulbs; resetting audio-visual and computer driven displays.  Tasks may include carpentry, wiring, painting, and computer design.
  • Assisting in the installation of new exhibits and/or display components.
  • Assisting in the occasional fabrication of display components and furnishings.
  • Other duties as assigned, including assisting in exhibit cleaning and assisting Exhibit Designer in various park projects.

Position Requirements:

  1. Must be able to work a varied schedule if requested, including weekends, holidays and evenings.
  2. Must have experience with basic hand and power tools and workshop practices.
  3. Must be self-motivated, organized and professional and able to work in a team and self-dependent environment.
  4. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety rules desired.
  5. Preferred, but not required – candidate should have or be pursuing a degree in fine arts, design, or museum studies.
  6. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  7. A valid driver’s license and their own vehicle (we will reimburse for gas mileage).

Physical Requirements:
Stretching and bending are moves commonly made throughout the day by the employee in this position. The employee must have the ability to do the following activities, with or without, reasonable accommodation: Frequent lifting, carrying, transporting, loading and unloading of up to 35 pounds, walking long distances and up steep inclines in all weather conditions, frequent twisting, bending, stooping, reaching and grasping. The employee will be exposed to a noisy, hot and dusty work environment and will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as instructed by the supervisor.  The employee will travel between the sites and must have a valid driver’s license and be able to ride a bicycle.

Work Schedule and Work Location:
This position works 40-hours per week and generally works five days a week although the days and hours worked may vary to meet park needs. The exhibit technician may be required to work weekends, holidays and/or evening hours. The workstation is the exhibit shop in Mackinaw City, although the work location may change as park needs dictate.

Dress Code:
The park maintains a dress code for employees working in public areas and in park service. This means no inappropriate hairstyles, jewelry or inappropriate clothing or fashions. Employee may be required to wear a park provided uniform.

Supervision:
This position reports to the Exhibit Designer and does not supervise other positions.

General Position Information:
This is a temporary seasonal at-will position which serves at the will of the employer and does not include recall right or benefits (other than those mandated by governmental laws). This position will expire at the time employment is ended for the season and the employee does not have recall rights to this or any other MSHP position in the future. Specifically, the park is under no obligation to hire the individual in subsequent seasons. The number of weeks and hours worked may vary as park needs dictate. Additional information will be provided upon employment.
