Scope of Duties:
This position serves visitors to Mackinac State Historic Parks (MSHP) by working in a janitorial capacity cleaning exhibits and display cases located in historic buildings in Fort Mackinac and at the Mackinac State Historic Parks downtown historic buildings. Position will also clean the Heritage Center which houses offices and artifact collections.

Daily cleaning of all exhibit areas at Fort Mackinac, weekly cleaning of Heritage Center and occasionally assist in the cleaning of downtown historic buildings. The goal of this position is to maintain a clean and safe environment for the museum objects on exhibit, maintain the period settings so they remain authentic looking to our visitors, and create a pleasant and safe environment for our visitors.

Fort Mackinac consists of 34 period room exhibits and six standard exhibits located in 14 separate buildings. There are two additional buildings that do not house exhibits, but are open to the public and may require occasional maintenance. The Heritage Center is a three-story building consisting of climate-controlled storage, work spaces, an archaeology lab, three offices and a restroom. The downtown buildings consist of six historic structures located throughout the downtown area of the City of Mackinac Island.

Work Location and Schedule:
This position will be located at Fort Mackinac, the Heritage Center and at the downtown historic buildings on Mackinac Island. The employee may be required to work at other sites as directed by park needs. Work schedules are subject to change depending on park operational needs. A normal work schedule will be 40 hours per week, 7:30am to 4:00pm. The employee may be asked to work evenings, holidays and/or weekends as park needs dictate.

Responsibilities:

  1. Put our visitors first by treating them as respected guests and serving their needs.
  2. Daily exhibit cleaning and cleaning of all public exhibit areas on a daily basis. This includes sweeping, vacuuming, cleaning viewing windows, exhibit cases and cubes, and wiping down of other surfaces. Duties may also include occasional mopping and window washing
  3. Conduct scheduled daily cleaning of period settings. Some period settings will require weekly cleaning and others are only cleaned on a monthly or as needed basis. Position will also clean non-public areas of the buildings (i.e.: storage rooms, etc.) as needed.
  4. This position will assist Park Operations unit in monitoring traps used to control pests, including emptying and replacing traps.
  5. The first floor of the Heritage Center is cleaned once a week. This includes vacuuming and mopping (with occasional waxing), wiping down surfaces and the cleaning of one bathroom. The second and third floors of the Heritage Center also require vacuuming on a regular basis.
  6. This position will assist in the cleaning of the downtown buildings exhibit areas and period settings.
  7. Other duties as assigned including assisting in exhibit installation on an as-needed basis, assisting Park Operations in various projects, and the winding of historic clocks located in the fort.

Position Requirements:

  1. Must be able to work a varied schedule if requested, including weekends, holidays and evenings.
  2. Knowledge of the standard methods, practices, tools and equipment of the janitorial trade, helpful, but not required.
  3. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety rules desired.
  4. Some knowledge of the proper use of chemicals and cleaning materials desired.
  5. Ability to operate and use janitorial tools, equipment and supplies, such as vacuum cleaners and cleaning compounds/solutions required.
  6. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Physical Requirements:
Stretching and bending are moves commonly made throughout the day by the employee in this position. The employee must have the ability to do the following activities, with or without, reasonable accommodation: Frequent lifting, carrying, transporting, loading and unloading of up to 35 pounds, walking long distances and up steep inclines in all weather conditions, frequent twisting, bending, stooping, reaching and grasping.

Dress Code:
The park maintains a dress code for employees working in public areas and in park service. This means no inappropriate hairstyles, jewelry or inappropriate clothing or fashions. The employee is required to be in approved park uniform at all times while on duty. The park will provide the uniform(s), which must be returned at the end of the seasonal employment.

Supervision:
This position is supervised by the Curator of Collections; position does not supervisor other employees or volunteers.

General Position Information:
This is a temporary seasonal at-will position which serves at the will of the employer and does not include recall rights or benefits (other than those mandated by governmental laws). This position will expire at the time employment is ended for the season and the employee does not have recall rights to this or any other MSHP position in the future. Specifically, the park is under no obligation to hire the individual in subsequent seasons. The number of weeks and hours worked may vary as park needs dictate. Additional information will be provided upon employment.
