Scope of Duties:
The archaeology field supervisor is the primary assistant to the Curator of Archaeology. This position serves visitors to Mackinac State Historic Parks (MSHP) by being responsible for supervising all aspects of excavation and recording of the archaeological site when the curator is not present and provides public interpretation of the archaeology site.
Work Location and Schedule:
The workstation for this position is Colonial Michilimackinac in Mackinaw City, although the employee may be required to work at other sites as directed by park needs. Work schedules are subject to change depending on park operational needs; however, a normal work schedule will be 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., 40 hours per week, five days a week with a one-half hour lunch period. The archaeology field supervisor will be on a rotating schedule splitting weekends with the curator. The employee may be asked to work evenings, holidays and/or special events as park needs dictate.
Responsibilities:
- Put our visitors first by treating them as respected guests and serving their needs.
- Supervises excavation during curator’s absence: coordinates excavation and recording, interprets stratigraphy, executes excavation strategy.
- Supervises lab work on rain days.
- Performs all aspects of excavating, recording, public interpretation and equipment care.
- Photographs and surveys in curator’s absence.
- Assists curator in clearing site, re-establishing grid, and other duties as assigned.
- Provides interpretation of archaeology to park guests.
Education and Experience:
- Minimum two seasons field experience under a professional archaeologist, one must be a historic site, one may be a field school.
- Responsible and organized.
- Ability to supervise other archaeology team members, both professional and volunteer.
- Ability to do informal public interpretation.
- Familiarity with MSHP archaeology recording system and park operations.
- Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
- Supervisory experience and/or knowledge of 18th century material culture is desired.
Physical Requirements:
The employee must have the ability to do the following activities with or without reasonable accommodation: the ability to speak before the public, walking over uneven terrain, kneeling, sitting and/or standing for long periods of time and carrying/lifting items up to 35 pounds. In order to carry out the duties, the archaeology field supervisor will encounter frequent twisting, bending, stooping, reaching and grasping. The employee may be exposed to various weather conditions including heat, cold, wind and rain; the employee must be able to work outside in those weather conditions.
Dress Code:
The park maintains a dress code for employees in the public service to promote a productive and safe work environment and to maintain MSHP’s public image. This means no inappropriate hairstyles, jewelry, clothing or fashion statements are allowed; further information regarding the archaeology dress code will be shared with the employee upon employment. MSHP will provide the necessary uniform pieces which must be returned at the end of seasonal employment. Please note that violation of the dress code may result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal.
Supervision:
This position supervises the seasonal archaeology crew members and volunteers. The archaeology field supervisor is supervised by the Curator of Archaeology.
General Position Information:
This is a temporary seasonal at-will position which serves at the will of the employer and does not include recall rights or benefits (other than those mandated by governmental laws). This position will expire at the time employment is ended for the season and the employee does not have recall rights to this or any other MSHP position in the future. Specifically, the park is under no obligation to hire the individual in subsequent seasons. The number of weeks and hours worked may vary as park needs dictate. Paydays are biweekly (every two weeks). It is anticipated that this position will work early June to late August and that the position will expire at the time employment is ended for the season. Additional information will be provided upon employment. Shared subsidized housing available.
