Mackinac History: A Continuing Series of Illustrated Vignettes, Volume V, Leaflet #1
In the spring of 1862, three gentleman from Tennessee arrived on Mackinac Island, not as tourists, explorers or missionaries but as prisoners of the federal government. These men has been arrested for supporting the Confederate government and the armies currently fighting in the field to create a new nation from the old republic. Captain Grover Wormer and his company of Stanton Guards would guard the prisoners inside Fort Mackinac for the summer. The prisoners would not endure the hardships many soldiers fighting in the war encountered, but their stay on the island would still be a distressing experience.
