Archaeological Completion Report Series, Number 19

House 7 of the South Southwest Rowhouse: Excavations at Fort Michilimackinac, 1998-2007 is number 19 in the Archaeological Completion Report Series. This series, founded in 1977, provides a forum for disseminating the results of archaeological research at the Straits of Mackinac. It has included archaeological site reports from several sites administered by the Mackinac Island State Park Commission, but also the results of more specialized studies resulting from larger scale analysis of the extensive archaeological collection.

In the late 1990s, strategic planning by Mackinac State Historic Parks staff identified the need for new exhibit space and visitor amenities inside the palisade walls at Michilimackinac. They realized that excavating the final unit of the South Southwest Rowhouse, mostly excavated in the 1960s, would allow for the reconstruction of a large building that could meet all these needs. The project also allowed archaeologists to try to connect new stratigraphic interpretations to old excavations. Todd Reck used data from the first four years of the House 7 project to create these links and use them to examine the persistence of French Canadian lifeways into the British era at Michilimackinac for his dissertation research. This report uses his methods to analyze the results from all ten years of excavation to better understand life in this multicultural fortified fur trading community.”
