Michilimackinac Archaeology 2021 Wrap-Up

The 2021 Michilimackinac field season came to a satisfying close in late August. After seven seasons of excavation, we have finally reached the bottom of the southeast root cellar!

To provide the soldiers with a taste of regular campaigning, through the 1880s the 23rd Regiment partnered with the Michigan State Troops (a forerunner to the Michigan National Guard) to host summer training camps. In 1888, the Michigan State Troops elected to hold the annual encampment on Mackinac Island.

The Project Goes On…

In 2004, Mackinac State Historic Parks began a long-term project to restore the original buildings at the Old Mackinac Point Light Station and reconstruct the missing elements.
