Ink bottles are common in trash pits outside Fort Mackinac. Cone shaped bottles like this are the most common and usually date to the nineteenth century. The bottom of this bottle is embossed “CARTER’S.” The Carter’s Ink Company was founded in Boston in 1858 and continues to make stamp pads and ink-related office products to this day. Separately bottled ink became rare after the invention of the ballpoint pen in the 1930s.
