Volunteer Opportunities

Mackinac State Historic Parks offers unique opportunities to volunteer in one of the most beautiful and fun-filled locations in Michigan!

Walk the paths that British and American soldiers walked over 125 years ago!  Watch glorious sunsets from Fort Holmes, the highest point on Mackinac Island, or from the sandy shores of Mackinaw City.  In the summertime, hear the cannons roar at Fort Mackinac and Colonial Michilimackinac or watch as a reconstructed 18th century sawmill at Historic Mill Creek turns logs into rough-planked boards!

We invite you to take a look at the current volunteer positions listed below, but please note that Mackinac State Historic Parks has limited volunteer opportunities during the winter.   During our open season - early May to early October - we have many more volunteer positions available on Mackinac Island and in Mackinaw City.  Positions such as historic interpreters, lighthouse docents, trail helpers, greeters, Mission Church wedding assistants (Mackinac Island) and archaeology assistants.

We are currently accepting volunteer applications for the positions listed below.  You may click on the link at the bottom of this page to view the volunteer position description.  If you are interested in applying for any of these volunteer positions, please click on the link below to the volunteer application and mail it to the address on the back of the application.

  • Library/Archivist (Mackinaw City)
  • Collections Curation Assistant (Mackinaw City)
  • Historic interpreters, lighthouse docents, trail helpers, greeters, Mission Church wedding assistants (Mackinac Island) and archaeology assistants, may be available for 2008.

Please note that we will make every attempt to accommodate you in your request for volunteer service.  However, at times we may not have a volunteer position available that will suit your interests, skills and dates of availability.

PARTICIPATION OF MINORS AS VOLUNTEERS
Mackinac State Historic Parks encourages the involvement of volunteers throughout our programs and this includes volunteer service of minors.  However, consistent with federal and state policy, we do have procedures that apply to minors.  Please contact our office for further information regarding minor volunteers and the minor participation form.  The volunteer position description indicates whether an individual must be 18 or older in order to volunteer in the position.

VOLUNTEER HOUSING
Housing is very limited and we prefer volunteers who reside in the area or are able to provide their own housing.  If housing is required we will make every attempt to accommodate you, but we may not be able to do so (especially in the winter months).  There are many campgrounds and hotels in the area that volunteers have used in the past.

VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION
We proudly recognize the valuable assistance of our volunteers by rewarding them for their donation of time and expertise.  All hours volunteered during the time frame of October 1st through September 30th of the following year will be calculated to determine the level of recognition.  Volunteers who provide their time and meet the hours requirement will be recognized in October.

HOW TO APPLY TO VOLUNTEER
Individuals wishing to volunteer are required to complete a volunteer application and submit it to the human resources coordinator.  We have included the link to the application below.
