Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse Archaeology

Routine testing carried out in 2004 prior to moving the lighthouse barn back to its original location revealed the presence of unexpected architectural remains; an intact brick-lined vault for a privy was located in the southeast corner of the building. The privy was designed to be cleaned out periodically and had been before the site was filled in. Several brick piers that supported the barn corners and joist were uncovered as well.
