These hour long programs bring the Straits area and Michigan to the classroom. Experience the sights, sounds and smells that will bring you closer to the cultural and natural history of Michigan. During the fall and spring our entertaining and informative interpretive staff bring these programs to you. These programs are designed for grades three through six.

Historic Mackinac on Tour - Cultural History Program
(see Historic Mackinac On Tour Program - Later Elementary) Hear the music, see the rifles, learn about soldier life all from your classroom. Two costumed interpreters bring the fur trade and Straits history to life with exciting demonstrations, hands on activities and a truck full of touchables. Students help in trading and bartering, carry a fur bale, get dressed in historic clothing and hear the sounds of the past!
How do I get this program? This program is available from late January through mid April throughout the state of Michigan.
To request a local (within 65 miles of Mackinaw City) program call the Education Line (231-436-4219). Call in date for January through April 2008 programs are on or after Tuesday, January 8, 2008 (local only)starting at 7:00 a.m. (no earlier, please!) Programs are scheduled on a first come, first served basis. Please contact us to be put on the local mailing list for more information.
To request a far (outside 65 miles of Mackinaw City) program call the Education Line (231-436-4219) or email Katie Cederholm. Programs are scheduled starting at the beginning of each school year. Availibility is on a first come, first-served basis.
We try to spend a week in one area with several schools or school districts - 12 to 13 hour long programs are needed for a week (two programs on Monday afternoon, three programs on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and two programs on Friday morning). We look to a teacher or administrator in the area to help us in this effort of organizing the week. We can split the weeks between two areas, if necessary. Please contact us for more information.
What information do I need to know about the program? • Each hour long program costs $75-local programs, $200-far programs (2007-08 rates) • There is a limit of 50-55 students (2 classrooms) for each program • Larger rooms on ground levels are great places to stage the programs (help may be needed for classrooms on 2nd level or higher for set up) • Two library sized tables needed for presentations • There is a 30 minute set-up/teardown time needed for programs • Space and program availability limited • After programs are scheduled, our Public Relations Officer may contact your local media to promote the program. Please let us know if this should be altered. • Historic Mackinac on Tour programs include firearms demonstrations. Blanks are fired from a musket and/or rifle. On the day of the visits, written permission from the school principal is required for the demonstration. Please tell us if you would not like this demonstration.
Water, Woods and Wildlife - Natural History Program
(see Water, Woods and Wildlife - Elementary) Curator of Natural History Jeff Dykehouse brings Michigan's ecosystem to the classroom with this Natural History program. Jeff teaches the natural history of our parks by spinning a web of life for students with taxidermy mounts, stories and activities. Learn about the Great Lakes watershed and find out why the Great Lakes are so great!
How do I get this program? This program is available in November, February and March within 65 miles of Mackinaw City only.
