SCOPE OF DUTIES:

This position serves visitors to Mackinac State Historic Parks (MSHP) by working as the Scout Coordinator at the Scout Barracks, Fort Mackinac, and Mackinac Island State Park on Mackinac Island, Michigan. This full-time seasonal position is responsible for the Mackinac Island Scout Service Program performing guide duties, flag duties, and other service projects and programs that assist MSHP. This position reports to the Interpretation Coordinator and does not supervise other employees.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Put visitors to Mackinac Island State Park and Fort Mackinac and other MSHP sites first by treating them with respect, serving their needs, and providing an enjoyable and educational experience.
  • Communicate with troops before and during their stay.
  • Ensure scouts in program perform guide duties, flag duties, service project, assist in Governor’s Residence Tours (in season) and other activities that assist Mackinac State Historic Parks.
  • Consult with Interpretation Coordinator and other staff to evaluate each troop on Tuesdays (mid-week) and Saturdays (final) in conduct, performance, appearance, and care of buildings and grounds.
  • Care for grounds and direct care and cleanup of Scout Barracks, Greany Grove, and any adjacent grounds.
  • Even though Mackinac State Historic Parks is not a regulated childcare organization, and the Scout Coordinator is not providing childcare, the safety and wellbeing of the scouts participating in the service program is paramount.  The Scout Coordinator should be alert to signs that any of the participants are experiencing abuse.  If the Scout Coordinator suspects that a scout is being abused, they are required to contact local law enforcement or call 855-444-3911 (the statewide child abuse hotline).  They should also notify MSHP.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess previous leadership experience at the Mackinac Island Scout Service Program.
  • Must have an interest in the scouting program and be dedicated to public engagement and education.
  • Must be outgoing, enthusiastic, self-motivated, and have strong public speaking and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to work with many age levels, varied boy and girl scout groups, and maintain composure during stressful situations.
  • Must be able to follow verbal and written directions and be able to verbally communicate with visitors and coworkers.
  • Must be able to work assigned position length. Position works 15 – 16 weeks, will start just before Memorial Day, and will work to Labor Day, or just a few days prior.
  • Must live at Scout Barracks in the Scout Coordinator’s quarters.
  • Pass a background check prior to employment.

WORK LOCATION AND SCHEDULE:

This is a full-time seasonal position, which typically works 40 hours per week for 15-16 weeks from just before Memorial Day through Labor Day (see position requirements). The workstation for this position is the Scout Barracks, Mackinac Island State Park, and Fort Mackinac, although the employee may be required to work at other MSHP park sites.

Work schedule is set in advance and is subject to change depending on park operational needs. The employee may be asked to work evenings, holidays, and/or weekends as park needs dictate.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position will require the employee to be active and outdoors in all types of weather conditions. The employee must have the ability to do the following activities, with or without, reasonable accommodation: walking, sitting and/or standing for long periods of time, speaking before the public, and walking up and down steep inclines and steps.  To carry out the duties, the interpreter may encounter frequent twisting, bending, stooping, reaching, and grasping. The employee must have the ability to utilize ferry boat transportation to and from Mackinac Island.

DRESS CODE:

The park maintains a dress code for employees in the public service to promote a productive and safe work environment and to maintain MSHP’s public image. Employees are required to be always in approved park dress code while on duty, which includes the wearing of proper footwear. Violation of the dress code may result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal.

  • Nametag – The assigned nametag must be worn while on duty.
  • Shirt – MSHP will provide several polo style shirts with the logo.  Both short and long-sleeved shirts will be available. Troops scout service program shirts are also appropriate to wear.   A jacket/fleece will also be provided for colder days.
  • Pants – Please bring and wear appropriate pants – no jeans, no fraying – khakis are a good example. Shorts are okay if they stay within the scout codes. Females may also wear skirts (no miniskirts).
  • Shoes – Tennis shoes or a casual shoe are fine. No flip flops.

GENERAL POSITION INFORMATION:

This is a temporary seasonal at-will position which serves at the will of the employer and does not include recall rights or benefits (other than those mandated by governmental laws). This position will expire at the time employment is ended for the season and the employee does not have recall rights to this or any other MSHP position in the future. Specifically, the park is under no obligation to hire the individual in subsequent seasons. The number of weeks and hours worked may vary as park needs dictate.
