Seasonal Employee Housing

If you are from a distance and are working for Mackinac State Historic Parks (MSHP), we can offer low cost, clean housing in Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island while you work for us.  What better way to experience these wonderful resorts towns!

Mackinaw City Housing
The Mackinaw City housing for Mackinac State Historic Parks is a converted single story motel located around the MSHP Mainland Administrative Offices.  It is within walking distance of Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse and Colonial Michilimackinac (located one block south of the fort).  Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park is located approximately three miles southeast.

Mackinaw City Housing - Rooms
Rooms usually are shared and have individual bathrooms.  All rooms include a bed (twin), dresser, a hanging space for clothing and sometimes a table and chairs.  Employees need to bring their own bedding, linens and may wish to bring their own fans, lamps, bins, etc.   A vacuum and cleaning supplies are available from the maintainence staff.   Rooms are separate for males and females.

Mackinaw City - Kitchen, Common Room, Laundry
A shared kitchen is available for all residents.  There are two stoves, three refrigerators and a microwave.  Many cupboards are available for storage and a few common dishes, utensils and cookware are available for use (changes annually).  Staff should bring their own items for use.  There is also a common room with a tv and couches for staff use.  Laundry facilities are available free-of-charge for staff, although they must provide their own detergent.  There is also a bike rack for staff bikes; please bring your own lock.

Mission House - Mackinac Island Housing
The Mackinac Island staff housing is located at the historic Mission House, approximately 1/2 mile from downtown on the east of the island (near Mission Point Resort).  It is within walking distance from Fort Mackinac and the downtown area.  A bicycle is the fastest way to get around on the island.

Mission House - Rooms
Housing is divided between men's and women's sections (west end is men's, east end is women's).  Rooms are singles or shared, contain beds (twin), a dresser and hanging space for clothing.  Some chairs and lamps may be available.  Staff need to bring their own bedding,  lamps, fans, etc.  Bathrooms are communal and usually accomodate around four to five staff members.  A vacuum and cleaning supplies are available from the maintainence staff.

Other Items of Interest

There is a $25.00 cash room deposit which is due when the employee moves into housing.  The deposit is returned to the employee when they move out of housing at the end of their employment (once their room has been inspected and it is determined there is no damage to the room and their room key has been returned).

Grocery stores are near to both housing units.  A small IGA is located several blocks from the housing in Mackinaw City and a small, family-owned grocery store is located downtown on Mackinac Island.  For larger purchases there is a Glen's Market in Cheboygan (15 miles from Mackinaw City) and St. Ignace.  There also is a Walmart, K-mart and other stores in Cheboygan.  Petoskey, Sault Ste. Marie and Gaylord also have those stores and many others.

Housing is available only for staff that currently work for Mackinac State Historic Parks.  There is no housing available for guests, but some area hotels do provide a discount for family/friends of local seasonal staff.  July and August are usually very busy and it is prudent to book early.

Because it is a resort area both Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island have opportunities for wi-fi access.  MSHP is currently looking into providing wi-fi for our housing.  Local libraries may have internet available and Mackinac Island has a internet cafe.  P.O. Boxes are available at the post office of both locations for a nominal six month fee which can be shared by multiple people.
